2027 Conference Theme: Rooted – Rising from Deaf Roots

In 2026, Waves of Change called the ASL profession to movement. It challenged us to recognize the shifts happening within our field—changes in perspective, responsibility, and accountability. Those waves disrupted comfort, questioned long-held assumptions, and pushed us to reflect on how we show up in our work. But waves do not exist in isolation. When the water settles, we are left with a question: What are we standing on?

In 2027, Hands Up Conference invites the profession to return to its foundation. Rooted – Rising from Deaf Roots centers the truth that the ASL profession exists because of Deaf people. American Sign Language, Deaf culture, and Deaf community are not products of the profession—they are its origin. Without Deaf people, there would be no language to learn, no culture to engage with, and no profession to practice. To move forward with integrity, excellence, and humility, we must reconnect with where it all began.

This year’s theme calls ASL professionals and interpreters to re-ground their practice in Deaf history, Deaf leadership, and Deaf lived experience. Growth without roots leads to disconnection; progress without grounding leads to harm. By returning to Deaf roots, we do not move backward—we rise stronger, more ethical, and more aligned with the community that makes this work possible. Rooted – Rising from Deaf Roots is a recommitment to placing Deaf people first, where they have always belonged.
